How to Prepare for a Speaking Engagement - BlogCover.png

Have you ever invested the time to create the perfect presentation, but were unclear on how to rehearse it? You are not alone. How to practice for a talk or presentation is one of the most frequently asked questions that we get. You might only get one shot to present to a specific audience and you want to ensure that you’re as prepared as you can be. In today's episode, we're going to cover exactly how to practice your presentation so that you feel confident when you step onto the stage.

Episode takeaways you don’t want to miss:

  • You only get one chance to deliver your content in front of your audience when speaking. If you’re going to put in the effort to pitch, land and write your talk, make the most of it with a killer delivery!

  • Before you start practicing, ask the event organizer for a picture of the room and information about the setup. Will there be a podium? Where is the projector? Will you be wearing a headset or have a clip-on microphone? etc...

  • Don’t just read through your outline over and over again. Actually stand up in front of as realistic of an audience as you have and deliver your speech

    • If you have slides, make sure you’re practicing with a remote and speaking to your slides

      • You need to know when to hit the button and if there’s a delay between slides changing etc…

  • If you’re going to have note cards or your laptop open in front of you, practice exactly how you’ll use them during your talk

  • If you’re going to be speaking behind a podium, practice speaking behind one!

    • If you don’t have one, your standing desk or kitchen counter will work just fine

  • Don’t practice once or twice. Do it until your presentation is robotic and flows naturally.

  • Film yourself practicing! You might feel like you’re doing great, but by analyzing film you can spot things ahead of time like the delivery of your joke, if you’re talking too fast, if you’re shoes are too squeaky, etc….
